Our Surroundings
Our Location
LAKE, lAGOON, OCEAN
Our retreat is located on Alabada Road in the small riverside village of Kathaluma, Ahangama 80650. Here, life moves to a gentler rhythm. Fishermen cast their nets at dawn across the glassy lake. The call of kingfishers and eagles fills the air. And right in front of you, Madol Duwa Island watches over everything.
You're far enough from the tourist trail to feel the real Sri Lanka. Yet close enough to access world-class beaches, dining, and experiences when you choose.
It's the best of both worlds. And it's yours to explore - or ignore - as you wish.

Getting Here
Why Ahangama?
Soul Moon Retreat is perched on the serene shores of Koggala Lake - one of Sri Lanka's largest and most beautiful natural lakes, stretching 13km from north to south. Wake up to uninterrupted water views. Watch traditional fishermen cast their nets at dawn. Listen to the call of kingfishers and eagles across the glassy surface.
The lake is dotted with small islands, some home to Buddhist temples and wildlife sanctuaries. It's a haven for birdlife, a painter's light, and a photographer's dream.
Yet beyond this peaceful waterfront scene, the famous beaches and surf breaks of Sri Lanka's south coast await - just minutes away.

Koggala Lake Is Calling
Madol Duwa Island: A Literary Landmark
Sitting directly opposite Soul Moon Retreat is the famous Madol Duwa Island. This is the real-life setting that inspired Martin Wickramasinghe's beloved 1947 novel of the same name, often called the "Sri Lankan Huck Finn."
Did You Know?
- The story follows two boys who escape dull village life to live self-sufficiently on the island - a tale of adventure, freedom, and growing up
- The novel has been translated into over eight languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese, German, Russian, and Italian
- Mark Twain himself - author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn - visited Sri Lanka in 1896, when Wickramasinghe was just six years old
- Wickramasinghe was a journalist and cultural preservationist who dedicated his life to capturing Sri Lankan folklore and rural customs before modernization swept them away

Boat tours can be arranged to visit Madol Duwa and the other islands of Koggala Lake. Ask our host or book through the app.

Yes! You have exclusive use of the entire villa during your stay. Our wonderful host lives on-site in separate quarters - they're there if you need anything, but otherwise respect your complete privacy. Think of them as a helpful neighbour who's available when you want support, invisible when you don't.

How does the solar power work?
At Soul Moon Retreat, we strive to tread lightly on the earth. Our hot water system is powered entirely by solar energy as part of our commitment to caring for the beautiful natural environment that surrounds us.
To help keep everything running smoothly, we kindly ask that you:
- Avoid using multiple high-energy appliances at the same time (such as hair dryers, kettles, and air conditioners)
- Be mindful of water consumption - every drop counts
- Switch off lights and appliances when not in use
A little awareness goes a long way in helping us maintain a comfortable and sustainable retreat experience for everyone.
While power outages in Sri Lanka are infrequent, they do occasionally occur. For your comfort, Soul Moon Retreat is equipped with a backup generator that powers essential services, including refrigeration and hot water. Please note that air-conditioning units are not connected to the generator.
During these times, we invite you to embrace the natural rhythms of tropical living by opening the doors and windows to enjoy the cooling lake breezes and gentle cross-ventilation that flow through the villa. If you choose to sleep with the doors or windows open, we recommend using the mosquito mat provided in your room to ensure a comfortable night's rest.
Thank you for helping us care for this special place and the environment that surrounds it.
Is there laundry service?
Soul Moon Retreat does not provide self-service laundry facilities onsite. However, laundry services can be arranged through our Retreat Caretaker for your convenience.
A fee of LKR 1,200 per kilogram applies for washing and drying and is payable directly to the Retreat Caretaker. If you would like to use this service during your stay, please speak with the Retreat Host, who will be happy to assist with the arrangements.
What about mosquitoes?
We're in a beautiful lakeside location, so mozzies do visit! Please take precautions and use the provided repellent. We've got you covered.

What's the best time of year to visit Ahangama?
The best weather on Sri Lanka's south coast is generally November to April, when you'll enjoy sunny days and calm seas. This is peak season for good reason!
May to October brings the southwest monsoon, with more chance of rain and rougher seas - though you'll also find fewer crowds and better rates. Some surfers actually prefer this time for bigger swells! The lake is beautiful year-round.
